The propagation of Gauss laser beam in different kinds of water is measured,and based on the measured data,the effect of optical attenuation coefficient on beam propagation is analyzed.Measurement results show that the radial power distribution of underwater laser at different ranges are in good agreement with Gaussian function;the radius of underwater spot is bigger than that of atmospheric spot,and increasing in the optical attenuation coefficient will make the radius of underwater spot bigger;the maximal power of underwater laser attenuate more serious than that of atmospheric laser,and increasing in the optical attenuation coefficient will make the maximal power attenuation of underwater laser more serious;the radial power distribution of underwater laser will be consistent at 2~3 attenuation lengths.
