The airborne IR search and tracking system（IRST）must be developed in accord with the demand of the future airplane.This paper firstly introduces the requirements of the IR sensor system which will be equipped on the fourth generation airplane.Development of IRST system and existing technology are also introduced.Then suggestion for developing new IRST system is put forward.
