Rainbow and secondary rainbow are common atmospheric optical phenomenons in the sky, which have been properly explained by geometrical optics theory.Nevertheless, the physical model of geometrical optics theory is relatively simple, which cannot illuminate the influence of the H2O particle size.Based on scattering theory the scattering phase functions of various particles are researched and the angular dispersion of the H2O particle group is demonstrated in this paper. The rainbow and secondary rainbow are explained by scattering theory. Moreover, the scattering theory is compared with geometrical optics theory. The results provide novel viewpoints for the research of atmospheric optical phenomenon.
