The original images acquired by infrared imaging devices can be converted to grayscale images which are suitable for human observation and computer processing. However, this procedure may lead to low contrast.Aiming at the problem of low contrast,an improved adaptive piecewise linear transformation algorithm is proposed.By comparing the number of cluster of gray histogram, this algorithm automatically select the parameter for the original image from a candidate set. Then the enhanced images can be obtained after gray-level linear transformation. The experimental results on real infrared data reveal that the proposed algorithm achieves better enhancement performance and the computing time is relatively short.Besides, the whole process of the algorithm is fully adaptive. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is expected to be applied to the real-time processing of infrared imaging devices.
